Three doctoral students capture SI awards
(May 2008) Three School of Information doctoral students have won awards for their abilities in research and teaching.
Rick Wash won the Gary M. Olson Outstanding Ph.D. Student Award, which carries a $1,000 honorarium. Wash was cited for his progress in the program, his achievements in terms of publications and presentations, and his service to fellow students. Wash joins previous winners Jeremy Birnholtz, 2004; Derek Hansen, 2005; Erik Johnston and Anya Osepayshvili, 2006; and Jun Zhang, 2007. The award is named in honor of Olson, the Paul M. Fitts Collegiate Professor of Human Computer Interaction at the U-M and a professor in the School of Information.
Meanwhile, Archer Batcheller and Eric Cook jointly won the SI Outstanding GSI Award on the basis of their teaching ratings and comments from students. They will share a $1,000 stipend. Previous award winners were Cal Lee, 2004; Kate Williams, 2005; Derek Hansen and Nikhil Sharma, 2006; and Libby Hemphill and Erik Johnston, 2007.
