Alumna Elisabeth Jones wins Paul Evan Peters Fellowship
(Oct 2008) Elisabeth Jones (MSI '07) has been honored with the 2008 Paul Evan Peters Fellowship from the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). Jones joins fellow alumni Christopher (Cal) Lee (MSI '99, Ph.D. '05) and Phillip M. Edwards (MSI '03) in being so honored. Lee and Edwards won the first two of the biannual Paul Evan Peters Fellowships, in 2002 and 2004 respectively.
With a research agenda that focuses on large-scale information-digitization initiatives, such as Google Book Search, Jones is interested in the complex web of social and political issues that affect, and are affected by, these ambitious undertakings. While a student at SI, she served as a research intern for the UM-Google Library Partnership, gaining first-hand experience with the project.
Jones's diverse background includes the study of anthropology, the visual arts, and librarianship and experience in political activism and community service. She is now a Ph.D. student in information science at the University of Washington.
The fellowship is given for for graduate study in the information sciences or librarianship, to honor the memory of Paul Evan Peters, who was CNI's founding executive director. It recognizes outstanding scholarship and intellectual rigor, and also civic responsibility, democratic values, and imagination.
