SI graduates rank first in 'Library Journal' salary survey

(Oct 2008)  School of Information graduates with a Master of Science in Information degree are the highest paid among master's graduates at institutions with programs in the information fields, a survey reported by Library Journal.com reveals.

Michigan graduates earned an average starting salary of $55,869, according to LibraryJournal.com. SI graduates -- who benefit from a broad-based education that covers a wide spectrum of information fields -- out-distanced graduates from fellow iSchools Caucus members and other schools in the field.

"That SI is leading the field in salaries is no surprise to our staff," says Kelly Kowatch, career counselor in the SI Office of Career Services & Practical Engagement Program. "The program at SI is of excellent caliber and the students are provided with a wide range of career development opportunities to help them reflect upon and pursue the best options available, both in terms of competitive salary and job satisfaction."

The Library Journal.com survey findings are consistent with salary survey results compiled by the School of Information. The SI salary survey of graduates typically has a response rate in the 75 percent to 85 percent range.

School of Information data collected from recent graduates reveals interesting salary statistics. Among them, the average salary of SI graduates by industry is:

Museums/historical societies$35,000
Public libraries$41,000
Academic libraries$42,000
Government$44,000
K-12 school libraries$47,000
Universities$50,000
Special libraries$55,000
Policy/Management$56,000
Nonprofits/nongovernmental organizations$57,000
E-commerce/marketing$68,000
Corporate IT$70,000
Consulting$79,000

It's important to note that as the information field continues to change, some traditional definitions of job classifications have blurred. For example, students who have a Master of Science in Information with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction could work in Web systems in a library. Or, a student who earned an MSI with a specialization in Library and Information Services might work in a corporation managing large databases and the information infrastructure.

The top 10 institutions ranked by LibraryJournal.com in terms of salary were as follows:

Michigan$55,869
Maryland$52,500
San Jose$49,293
Washington$48,176
UCLA$47,689
Western Ontario$47,266
Southern Connecticut$46,975
Rutgers$46,428
Pratt$45,908
Tennessee$43,355
