Scholarships and Fellowships
The School of Information offers a number of scholarships for students and sets a high priority on establishing additional funding opportunities. Current scholarships and awards are listed below. - Thomas E. Alford Scholarship Fund
Established by Thomas Alford (AMLS '64) to support master's students studying in the information professions.
- Alumni Society Endowment for Scholarships
Established through contributions of School of Information alumni and the School of Information Alumni Society.
- Anne Beaubien Berry Scholarship
- Wallace and Joyce Bonk Scholarship
Established in honor of Wally Bonk, chair and professor in the Library Department and Joyce Bonk, who worked for 30 years with the Clements Library at the University of Michigan.
- Sister Claudia Carlen Scholarship
Established by friends and colleagues to honor Sister Claudia Carlen (ABLS '28, AMLS '38).
- The Dean's Emeriti Scholarship Fund
Created to honor the careers and dedication of previous deans of the School of Information.
- Mona A. East Scholarship Fund
Provides scholarship support to master's degree-level students in the area of librarianship. Established in memory of Mona East, (AMLS '52).
- Virginia Ehrlicher Fellowship
Provides student support to students demonstrating superior talent and ability. Established by Virginia Ehrlicher (AMLS '61, Ph.D. '74).
- Faculty/Alumni Scholarship
- Judith J. Field Scholarship
Established to help students who show a strong commitment to librarianship, are interested in the provision of quality service to their clients, are forward-thinking, and have or show potential for being strong leaders.
- Morris and Ida Fine Scholarship
Provides tuition support to students with a strong commitment to public service who have a financial need and might not be able to attend graduate school without assistance. Established through bequest by Ruth Fine (ABLS '29), in memory of her parents.
- C. Olivia Frost Award
- Gwinn-Cole Family Scholarship
Established by Nancy E. Gwinn (AMLS '69) and John Y. Cole to support master's students studying in the information professions.
- Phelix B. Hanible Scholarship
Established by family and friends of Phelix B. Hanible (AMLS '84) to honor her dedication to the field of librarianship.
- Sharon A. Hogan Scholarship
Provides support for students entering the master's program at the School of Information. Endowed through bequest by Sharon Hogan (AMLS '68).
- Karen Horny Scholarship
Provides scholarship support for students pursuing professional careers in the information professions. Established by Karen Horny (AMLS '66).
- Albert D. and Clara Stanton Jones Scholarship
Supports students pursuing professional careers in the information professions. Established by Stanton Jones, Vinetta Jones, and Kenneth Jones in honor of their parents, Albert D. and Clara Stanton Jones (ABLS '38).
- Roberta C. Keniston Scholarship
Established in honor of her mentor, Roberta C. Keniston (AMLS '51), by Suzanne O. Frankie, (AMLS '59).
- Stephen I. Markel Scholarship
- Beth McWilliams Scholarship Fund
Provides scholarship support to students pursuing a specialization in law librarianship. Established in memory of Beth McWilliams (JD '77, AMLS '91) and of her dedication to, and accomplishments in, the field of law librarianship.
- Marylouise D. Meder Scholarship
Provides tuition support to continue Meder's lifelong commitment to helping students develop into professionals. Established by Marylouise D. Meder (Ph.D. '66).
- Professor Miranda Lee Pao Memorial Fund
Established in memory and honor of School of Information Professor Miranda Lee Pao by her family, the School, and friends of Professor Pao.
- Francis Warren Peters, Jr. Scholarship
Created through the bequest of Francis Peters (AMLS '50).
- ProQuest Information Management Fellowship
Provides tuition support for students in the area of information management. Established through the generosity of University Microfilms, Inc.
- Mary Rollman Scholarship
Provides support for a student pursuing graduate education in librarianship. Established as a permanent memorial to Mary Rollman (ABLS '36) by her family.
- Beatrice Rottenberg Scholarship
- Joseph B. Rounds Fund for Excellence in Librarianship
Provides scholarship support for a graduate student whose credentials reflect outstanding academic achievement and a significant potential for professional success in librarianship. Endowed by Joseph B. Rounds (ABLS '31, AMLS '38).
- Thomas P. Slavens Scholarship Fund
Established in honor of School of Information Professor-Emeritus Thomas P. Slavens.
- John L. and Lela M. Spanier Scholarship
Established with funds bequeathed to the School by John Spanier (AMLS '49).
- Kathryn E. Taylor Scholarship
- Kenneth E. Vance Scholarship
Established in memory and honor of Kenneth E. Vance (AMLS '50), professor and assistant dean, School of Information.
- Dr. Robert and Jane Warner Scholarship
Established through the support of the late Dean Emeritus Robert M. Warner and his late wife, Jane.
- Olivia Ferguson Richman Way Scholarship
Provides scholarship support for a student with a continuing commitment to the profession of school librarianship. Established by Olivia Ferguson Richman Way (AMLS '56).
- Yaney/Longon/Wetherell Family Scholarship
Established by Barbara Palmer (AMLS '68) to assist students interested in pursuing careers in K-12 school media. The scholarship recognizes her parents, Jean Wetherell Longon and Russell Longon; her grandfather, Clifford T. Wetherell, and Joseph P. Yaney.
- Tung-Li and Hui-Hsi Yuan Award

"I was extremely surprised, as well as delighted, when I heard that I was the 2000-01 recipient of the Russell Bidlack Scholarship. Surprised, because I did not know that such a large scholarship existed. Delighted, since it meant that I did not have to worry as much about financing my second year of education at the School of Information. Thank you for making my studies at the School of Information less stressful."
