Alumni Society Scholarship
Margo Crist (AMLS '69), former president of the Alumni Society, represented the many donors to the Alumni Society Scholarship Endowment. Crist was Alumni Society president in 1996-97 when SI embarked on the scholarship project, which continued the process begun under Jean Tabor's leadership the previous year.
"I had a strong vested interest in our success, but on a broader level, the idea that alumni could emerge from this as an even more important resource for the new School was very important for the future of our Alumni Society. I care passionately about librarianship, so that regardless of the name, to see my School delivering on what makes librarianship the valued profession it has been easily translated into my wholehearted support of the Campaign for Scholarships." Crist says.
From her relatively new vantage point as director of libraries at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Crist sees even more clearly that while SI graduates are extremely well-educated and competent, the School "is not the only game in town and good students will be attracted to a number of competitive schools."
Crist adds, "If we want to maintain our edge, we absolutely must compete in the financial arena. That is why I have personally pledged my own financial support, including a major planned gift for scholarships. Our future as a profession depends on our understanding of the need for philanthropy and our actions to make that a reality. This endowment permanently marks the 60 years that our Alumni Society has been in existence; imagine what we'll be able to do in the next 60 years!"
