Karen Louise Horny Scholarship
"It was time for me to give something back -- to say thank you for providing me with a world-class education that has enabled me to enjoy a wonderful career in academic libraries," says Karen Horny (AMLS '66).
"I want to know that my contributions are making a difference now." Horny wanted to endow a scholarship but wondered how to do this. As dean of library services at Southwestern Missouri State University, she knew that unless she won the lottery, making an outright cash gift of $25,000 would be impossible. Librarians are creative folks and so she persevered, engaging in a variety of discussions with the School. She decided that she would make a pledge over a period of years to complete the endowment. In fact she discovered that using appreciated securities was an excellent way to fulfill part of her pledge while enjoying not owing capital gains taxes. Further talks led her to realize that she could also significantly add to her endowment through planned giving while saving estate taxes.
"It feels really good to be able to do this -- to know that in my own way I have been able to make a difference for students. Making a pledge and a planned gift is much less complicated than I thought. My experience was thoroughly satisfying and I do look forward to meeting my scholar each and every year. It is like having an extended family."
