Roberta C. Keniston Scholarship
When Suzanne O. Frankie (AMLS '59) agrees to do something, she does it in very big way. Little did she know that when in 1996 she took on the daunting task of raising $600,000 as chair of the Alumni Society Campaign for Scholarships, she would not only be dean of Kresge Library at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, but that her second (unpaid) job would be chairing meetings, writing letters, meeting with alums, traveling to Washington, D.C. -- anything to get the word out that we had a cause and needed everyone's support.
As a part of her commitment to the success of the campaign, Frankie came forth with a major pledge to create the Roberta C. Kensiton Scholarship Endowment. Keniston was her mentor at the U-M University Library and Frankie felt that not only would this serve as a lasting tribute to her Keniston, but also would be a wonderful legacy for current and future generations of SI students. In addition to Frankie's pledge and gifts, she invited other alums to join her, and in less than one year's time, the endowment was established.
"I am simply delighted with the extraordinary success of this campaign and extremely proud to have been a part of what surely must be the first 'library' school to experience this degree of success -- raising well over one million dollars -- this is a remarkable achievement. I am filled with pride and hope that you share my sense of excitement and accomplishment. Let's keep the momentum going because there are still students in need. Does anyone want to go for two million?"
