Law Librarianship Scholarship in Memory of Beth McWilliams

The first scholarship in law librarianship at the School of Information honors the memory of one of its graduates who served as reference librarian at the U-M Law Library.

The Beth McWilliams Scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic and career records who wish to study law librarianship, or international law librarianship, at U-M.

McWilliams received her Master of Information and Library Studies in 1991 from the School, and her Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 1977 from the U-M Law School. She received a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from Indiana University in 1974. At Indiana, where she majored in political science, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Lambda Delta.

After a successful career as a lawyer, McWilliams decided to focus on the research side of law instead of the practice of law. She combined her educational backgrounds to serve as reference librarian at the U-M Law Library from September 1990 until her death in July 1994. Among her duties, she was responsible for developing the Law Library's international law collection; she performed legal research for Law School faculty; she supervised the Law Library Faculty Research Service; and she provided reference service, and international legal research instruction. McWilliams especially enjoyed the research and collection development aspects of her Law Library work, and felt she had found her niche in law librarianship.

Prior to working at the University of Michigan, McWilliams was vice president and manager of the Documentation Department at Comerica, Inc., in Detroit, from 1985-89. She also served as a senior attorney with Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago from 1981-85, and was an associate attorney with Ross & Hardies in Chicago from 1978-81.

McWilliams was a member of the American Association of Law Libraries and its Foreign, Comparative and International Law Special Interest Section, the Michigan Association of Law Libraries, and the State Bar of Illinois.

Individuals who wish to support the Beth McWilliams Scholarship Fund may forward contributions to the Alumni Relations and Development Office, School of Information, 304 West Hall, 550 East University Avenue, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-1092.

Information about scholarship applications is available from the School of Information by calling (734) 763-2281.
