University Library Associates Program

Although there is no required course of study for University Library Associates (ULA), many associates prepare for careers in librarianship. Many elect the specialization in Library and Information Services, while others choose from other SI specializations or put together a tailored degree.

During the fall and winter terms, ULAs meet with the academic program advisor, Assistant Professor Soo Young Rieh, to discuss work assignments, course selection, and other topics as their interests dictate. At times, meetings may include library mentors or school and library administrators.

As a library associate, you may elect to earn a PEP credit. Specifically, the policy is:
  • You may elect SI 690 for one credit for your work in the fall and winter terms. Type of work and projects are determined by supervisors and ULAs and involve mentoring from supervisors.
  • As a ULA, in collaboration with your supervisor, you submit a work plan by the end of the first week of the term to Practical Engagement Program office (pep.office@umich.edu) detailing goals and plans for training, attending meetings, etc.
  • Each ULA is required to submit an evaluation of the experience by the last day of the term. This report includes your summary of goals and projects accomplished, quality and value of experience, quality of mentoring received, and relevance of SI coursework.
  • Each supervisor submits an evaluation to the PEP office (pep.office@umich.edu) at the end of the term.
