What Can I Do with a Tailored MSI?

Students pursuing a Tailored MSI often build their coursework and practical experience around a specific interest, or they may focus on building a diversified skill set.

In either case, graduates with a Tailored MSI obtain employment in a wide range of career fields based on their specific career interests -- in public libraries, academic libraries, and government and K-12 libraries, as well as museums, consulting firms, and IT organizations.

Tailored MSI students find that a combination of courses from various specializations can prepare them well with the knowledge base and skills set required in a select career field or in diverse career fields.

For example:
  • A student interested in a career in digital libraries may find a blend of HCI and LIS courses the best curriculum to make her marketable in that field.
  • A student interested in working in a non-profit organization may find that a strong set of HCI courses and participation in the Community Information Corps (CIC) will prepare him well in the field of community information and technology.
  • A student interested in both archives and libraries who wants to keep her career options open may find that a combination of ARM and LIS courses allows her the flexibility to go into either career field.

Tailored MSI graduates can market themselves and sell their specialization as a strength in their resumes and cover letters by focusing on skills and interests, and by highlighting what is relevant to the targeted employer and position.

While the four MSI specializations already afford diverse career options, the Tailored MSI curriculum is an academic choice that affords even greater flexibility for course selection and career alternatives.
