Quick Tips for Successful Interviewing
- Before the interview, you must do a personal inventory. Make sure you have thought about your skills and interests. Employers look for employees who know what they do well and convey their talents and interests in an interview.
- Research your potential employer! Students must understand the organizations they interview with. Learn as much as possible from organization Web sites, job search boards and word of mouth. Know what your potential employer does and how your skills meet their needs. You cannot possibly know everything, but a little effort will show.
- Anticipate the questions you will be asked by the interviewer. Will your interview be behavioral? Maybe a case interview? Determine the format in advance and prepare. Career Services offers mock interviews/case studies to help you become familiar with the types of questions you will face.
- Dress professionally! Make sure that you are appropriately dressed. For women, a blouse and skirt or pant suit is acceptable. For men, a suit or sport coat, shirt and tie, is preferred. Pay attention to small details such as shoes and socks. Do not wear distracting jewelry or perfume/cologne. Err on the conservative side -- you do not want to attract undue attention and make the employer remember you for your loud attire, strong stench, or mismatched socks!
- Bring relevant materials to your interview. You should carry a folder/padfolio (not a binder! -- purchase or borrow one from a friend) and copies of all relevant materials, including resumes, letters of reference, writing samples, and portfolio work. Each employer will require different supporting documents, but be sure at a minimum to have extra copies of your resume.
- Be on time! Plan to arrive at least ten minutes early and remember that you are being evaluated from the moment you arrive at the interview site. Be conscious of comments you make in the hallways and restrooms. The walls have ears!
- Relax and be yourself! An interview is an opportunity for an employer to get to know the candidate. Pay attention, breathe, and answer the questions you are asked. Be concise and do not ramble. You want to exude confidence and show that you are well-prepared.
- Remember the interview is also a chance to learn about the organization. Have some questions prepared in advance to ask your interviewer. For example:
- How is the organization organized? Do people work in teams or individually?
- Is there a formal training program? Will I have a mentor?
- What is a typical day like for someone in this position?
- Are there opportunities for advancement?
- Remember to thank your interviewer at the conclusion of your discussion. Ask for a business card and inquire about the hiring process. Determine the time frame for decisions and whether you should send any additional information.
- Following your interview, write a thank you letter within 24 hours. An e-mail is also acceptable. Address it directly to the interviewer (using the address on the business card), expressing interest in the job, and mentioning one or two interesting things you learned during your conversation.
