SI 602: Practical Engagement Workshop in Digital Preservation (Winter Term)

In this course, clients are provided with a student consultant/intern to guide them through the development of preservation activities. Interns in the past have provided the following services:

  • Development of a digitization, metadata, access and preservation plan for collection
  • Evaluation of and preparing collections for cataloging and digitization
  • Investigation of and modeling of how to create access to view the collection online
  • Collection scanning
  • Cataloging
  • Peer review of established digitization practices
  • Survey and interview development and facilitation
  • Disaster Planning

Project Outcomes/Benefits for Clients

Interns will apply what they are learning in their digital preservation coursework to real-world settings. With the help of the course instructor, who will act as co-mentor, the intern will consult on a range of issues including policy-development, digitization, RFP and grant proposal development.

Ideal Clients

Organizations in Southeastearn Michigan that create and/or acquire digital materials. These organizations should have established, nascent, or nonexistent digital preservation programs. The course structure enables SI to offer internships in a broader range of local institutions with limited digital preservation expertise since the instructor acts as a co-mentor with the onsite supervisor.

Past Clients

MATRIX Center for Humane Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences at Michigan State University, Ypsilanti Historical Society, Michigan Theater, HathiTrust Digital Library, Bentley Historical Library, and Ford Motor Co.
