Egg Tempera

Panel Pieces

On this trip to the UM Museum of Art, we examined two egg tempera paintings: "The Birth of the Virgin" and "The Madonna and Child with Two Saints".

Bill Hennessey, the Museum director, led a discussion on the paintings that focused on how a viewer asks questions of a piece of art. In the process of interrogating these paintings, we learned about the artists, the purpose and subject of the works, and the life of the painting and its frame.

Back in the studio at Emerson School, we further discussed the two pieces and experimented with egg tempera painting. We made use of the same materials as the original artists and learned the same processes and techniques for creating egg tempera art work.
