Asian Ink Painting

"The Orchid Pavilion"

This lesson focused on Asian ink painting. During our museum trip, Marshall Wu, the Asian Art Curator at the U of M Museum of Art, introduced us to the "Orchid Pavilion" scroll, pictured above. Mr. Wu talked about the ritual illustrated in the scroll, as well as the scroll itself. We learned about how scrolls are made, handled, and read.

After examining the "Orchid Pavilion", Mr. Wu demonstrated the art of Asian ink painting. He showed us the materials required, how to make the ink, and discussed the importance of practice. During his demonstration, Mr. Wu painted a bamboo stalk, a bird, a flower, and a monkey.

In the studio, we learned to make our own ink and practiced several different brush strokes, including the bamboo stalk and leaf.
