Pointillism

"Under the Lamp"

During this visit to the U of M Museum of Art, we examined Dubois-Pillet's "Under the Lamp", a pointillist painting. As with our previous visits, we interrogated this painting to learn more about its origins, its subject, and other aspects of the work. We discussed the contents of "Under the Lamp" and speculated as to their purpose and meaning. The framing of this painting is also quite unique, and comparing it to other frames in the room provided an opportunity to learn about the purpose of a frame.

In class, we watched a video about the life of George Seurat, who created the pointillist method of painting. We viewed some of his work, and went through the same processes to make our own pointillist paintings.
