CHICO, the Cultural Heritage Initiative for Community Outreach, is based at the University of Michigan School of Information. CHICO includes participants from the School of Information, University departments in the arts and humanities, and area K-12 schools as well as local, regional, and national museums, and public libraries.
The goal of CHICO is to make cultural heritage materials accessible to a broad array of audiences. Through our pilot projects with area partners, we are creating online multimedia resources with a strong multicultural focus, and are developing personalized services and programs to assist in the use of online technologies and resources. Our projects incorporate images, sound and video to enrich museum visits, classroom instruction, and independent research.
By extending learning beyond the bounds of the classroom into other areas of the community, by providing remote access to the riches of cultural heritage materials available on the World Wide Web, and by helping people exchange ideas and creativity through online communication, we hope to redefine the cultural heritage experience for many.
We are making extensive use of high technology tools and information resources to broaden the reach of cultural heritage materials and support curriculum development and cultural exchange in the arts and humanities. CHICO's diverse mission allows it to encompass such varied projects as the development of an electronic cultural exchange between students in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Taos, New Mexico; the recreation of an early 20th century archaeological expedition to the Near East; and an interactive display of musical instruments that employs sound, video, and images to revolutionize the way students learn about the world of music.
Support for the project has been provided through the generosity of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
