Help Wanted Ads, Yesterday and Today

Subject: Work
Materials: Word processors, construction paper, glue, scissors, newspaper, and cassette player
Activity: Creating an Advertisement

Procedure:

1. Select an ad from the help wanted section of the newspaper, cut it out and rewrite the information it contains on a word processor.

2. Choose a photograph from the exhibit (e.g., the cane cutters); write an ad on the word processor and list the skills required for that occupation.

3. Mount both ads on construction paper and place face down.

4. Choose an ad; pretend you are an interviewer and select an applicant; decide whether applicant has the skills necessary for the job.

5. Rotate your position to that of applicant.

6. Tape findings on cassette player; discuss feelings about applying for a position without pay and with unusual or harsh working conditions.

7. Bind ads to make a book for class library;

8. Use book to compare and or contrast occupations and skills of yesterday and today.

Discuss how recent ads depict sports figures and models, but seldom portray images of African Americans as they really are in everyday life.
