Does Race Really Exist?

Subject: Race
Curriculum Area: Science
Instructional Objectives: Develop research skills.
Materials: Students-notebook and pens, as well as a copy of the Newsweek article, "The Search for Adam and Eve," Jan. 11, 1988 and a world map.
Activity: Discussion

Procedure:

1. Ask students to name all the races they know. Make sure that students are able to make the distinction between a person's race, religion, ethnic group, or nationality.

2. Before students read the article, ask them to write down five reasons why they believe or disbelieve races exist.

3. Next, create a list of races from the students and write them on the board.

4. After the list has been generated, ask them to read along with the pre-recorded excerpts of the article.

5. Ask students to reread the article, only this time looking for reasons that either prove or disprove their arguments.

6. Ask students to try to find at least three articles that either prove or disprove their argument, and have them document the articles.

7. Have students find or draw pictures of racial types. Discuss how stereotyping influences their perceptions of race.

8. Have a classroom discussion on the difference between racism and racialism.
