Rapping
up the Story of Resistance and Resisters

Procedure:
1. Students will write a rap about resistance to enslavement;
they will discuss one of the freedom fighters they have read about, such
as: Toussaint L'Ouverture, Gabriel Prosser, Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman,
Sojourner Truth.
2. This rap must include the person's birth and death dates
and three outstanding accomplishments that make him or her a freedom fighter.
3. The rap must include:
(a) an introductory statement with the name of student and the name
of freedom fighter
(b) information on the person
(c) a conclusion that presents why I like this person and what he or
she means to me
4. Group Activity
(a) Students should be organized into groups and each group assigned
one of the following roles:
| i. researcher(s) |
iii. director |
| ii.a composer, writer |
iv. performers (the group) team of 2 to 3 |
(b) Time allotments should be allocated to complete the project as
follows:
i. research deadline
ii. 1st draft deadline
iii. final draft
iv. presentation
(c) The student groups must present a written script and then present
their performance.
5. Alternatively, students should:
(a) read the poetry of writers, such as Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen,
Nikki Giovanni, etc.
(b) listen to the works of rap artists who present historical information
-- Afrika Bambaata, Queen Latifa, KRS-1, etc.
(c) listen to and read the Last Poets, etc.
