Migrants from the continent of Africa come from diverse ethnic, religious and national backgrounds. Representing more than a thousand ethnic groups, they spoke more than a thousand languages. African Americans are descended from the mixtures of these diverse African groups, whites of Europeans descent, and native Americans throughout the hemisphere.
