Charley
Patton was the first great star of Delta Blues. He became an acknowledged
celebrity who would influence many Delta musicians. His horse singing
style, fluid guitar, and unrelenting beat made him very popular.
His ability to entertain made him very popular and he was often
called to play at plantation dances and juke joints. He is credited
with being one of the original architects of putting blues into
a strong, syncopated rhythm. He also created most of the now-common
guitar gymnastics. His music ranged from blues, ballads, ragtime,
and gospel. In 1929 he began recording with Paramount and within
a year he was the largest selling blues artist. His biggest recording
was "Pony Blues".
