Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield)
April 4, 1915 - April 30, 1983
Born: Rolling Fork, MS

Muddy Waters has been called the grand overlord of blues. He became popular in the late 1940s in Chicago, but his sound was rooted in the Delta. Before his move to Chicago in 1943 he was renowned for his blues playing across the Delta. He was best known for his playing of the slide guitar. In the late 1940s he defined the Chicago blues sound and his slide skills were recognized all over Chicago's Southside. He climbed the R & B charts for years after 1948 when he recorded the first national R & B hit. His success continued for the next three decades earning him a permanent place in blues history.
