Reflections from Letitia Byrd's life
Alana:

  • I would think about the dinner her mother cooked. Because the way she described it sounded so good.
  • I would change to stop getting sick so much so I could play in my dollhouse.
  • I wish I could gone to her school because they did so much neat stuff and it sounded like they had the greatest teacher, and they were very well educated.
  • She used to go to drive-in movies and people today rarely go to drive-in movies. When she was a kid she couldn’t play indoor soccer because indoor didn’t exist.

Eleanor

  • I would love to think back on all the places I had been, as Letitia had been to many places and also when I had been young fighting for African-American’s rights. I like to say that I had helped African-Americans like myself get their rights.
  • I had made the decision to move here because of my son. I wanted him to have the best education and Ann Arbor did not fail.
  • I won Ann Arbor’s best citizenship award and I was so proud! My heart nearly burst when I saw that I was on the front page, my face beaming on the picture!
  • When I was a friend of Letitia’s, we used to go out roller-skating together. She always came back with a scraped knee or a hurt arm and sometimes she would get real sick and we would play in her dollhouse and wave to her now and then.

Tracie:

  • I would think of how Michigan changed. Michigan changed a lot because now there are more cars and some of the cities have a larger population than they used to.

Reflections from Lois Jelnick's life
Jackie:

  • I would think about my schooling as a nurse and the ugly brownish dresses they had to wear.

Reflections from Linda McKenny's life
Annie:

  • I would think back to how Ann Arbor changed so much. Because it is so different now. I would think of Tumy road. It was a dirt road before and now its paved. I would probably miss the way we played on that road. It was so fun! I love it now but I loved it even more back then.
  • She lived on my street. She saw our house and road a long time ago.

Sarah B.:

  • If I were Linda McKenny, I would think about the way things have not changed like Burns Park has been here since she was my age.
  • I wish I could have seen the schools and stores. And see what kind of things they had.
  • We would run around Burns Park and sing songs.

Reflections from Grandma Tina Parravano's life

Claire:

  • I would think about sitting out in the sunshine embroidering with friends and showing her mom what she had done and feeling pride in her heart.

Elspeth:

  • The war and sewing. It was Grandma Tina’s most popular subject. The war was a popular subject because it was a big thing and it was hard to forget.
  • We would play dolls and house. Very feminine games. That’s what Grandma Tina did when she was my age.

Reflections from Alice Sano's life
Claire:

  • Playing my cello in the camps for all the people to hear and playing with my friends and to lighten people’s spirits there in concentration camps.
Rhiannon:
  • I can’t walk to an ice cream store whenever I wanted. I can play on the computer, and she couldn’t.
