Old Hamilton Masks

back Plant Masks next

Naunraruat kegginaqut
Plant masks: When Justina Mike of St. Marys saw these masks, she commented, "They have painted the masks white. When there is lots of snow on the ground, the berries and plants are plentiful the following summer. Perhaps this is the person of those plants. Perhaps that is the meaning behind the mask." 2002, 64-64-11, 64-7-23 UAM

Out of the earth, grass and other plants appeared. As they grew, they would spin a top. Whenever the top would stop spinning the plants would quarrel saying that the top had turned toward them.

Based on the exhibit curated by Ann Fienup-Riordan
