Qissunaq Masks

back Walrus Mask next

Asveruaq kegginaquq
One of two walrus masks that Alfred Milotte photographed in use in Qissunaq in 1946 and Waskey purchased. Joseph Tuluk of Chevak remembered the mask: "Ingluilnguq made it. His tuunrat [spirit helpers] were walruses. So because he was a shaman, he let a carver make this. And this one also has a song." 314-4351 UAM

"Yurayuirutellruut yuut. Tua-i-ll' augna Kass'aq tarenrairista tekilluni tarenrairiyugluni yuralrianek qasgimi. Yurarcetellrui kegginaqirtelluki. Tuakenirnek-llu ataam yuraryautellruut yuut nunamni."

"Dancing was stopped. And then this photographer [Alfred Milotte] came to take pictures of an old dance in the qasgiq. He let them dance a masked dance. And from that, our dancing started again down at our village."

— David Boyscout, Chevak, July 1994
