Ecology Lesson

Ecology is the study of living things in their natural surroundings or environment.

The Yup'ik masks above show a great knowledge of the ecology of southwestern Alaska. Click on a mask at the top of this page to read stories told by Yup'ik elders about the animal represented in the mask.

The Yup'ik stories are told by Yup'ik elders who remember when Yup'ik masks were celebrated with dances, stories and songs. All were originally told in the Yup'ik language and translated word for word. The stories may seem "different" to you—a story that is told out loud is organized differently than one that is written, and sometimes repeats details.

The Yup'ik people believe that storytellers should only tell stories of their own experiences. One storyteller explained, "things were done differently in other places and they [storytellers] can tell only what they had observed or experienced." We believe that you will come to respect and honor the Yup'ik people by reading their stories and reflecting on them.
