Food/survival: Used for flavoring and coloring blue cornmeal mush, berries can be eaten or chewed to keep from getting hungry.

Ceremonies/medicine: Used as medicine to cure headaches, influenza, stomach ache, nausea, spider bites, postpartum pain.

Art: As a subject, for wood carving, berries are used to dye wool brown for weaving.

Other uses: Use to build hogans and summer shacks, bark is use to start a fire and it also used as firewood.
