Over the next two months, SI Computing will migrate SI’s NetWare servers to
Windows Active Directory. As part of this process we will:
- Go from 8 NetWare servers down to 3 Windows Active Directory servers (saving
money)
- Cut down on the number of passwords you will have to remember (see the next page on
how to set your Umich Active Directory password)
- Migrate all data from the Courses, Groups and Users volumes on SELMA (NetWare)
to Groups and Users folders on the new Windows AD file server SI-HOMER. The
Courses volume will become a folder on the new Groups volume. All permissions
on these current volumes will be replicated on the new server volumes.
- Migrate all doctoral student folders on SKINNER/Students to the new Users volume
on SI-HOMER. All permissions on the Students volume will be replicated on the
new Users volume for these students.
- Replace NAL with a better system for obtaining software on SI-managed Windows
laptops and desktops.
- Increase the security of the SI server environment
There will be many messages about this process over the next couple of weeks. In
order to save several thousand dollars in NetWare licensing fees, our goal is to finish
this migration and have the current SI NetWare servers shut down by June 30th, 2008.
