All SI faculty, staff and students automatically have a cPanel based personal website on SI's people.si.umich.edu server. This is for personal websites and projects, and not for group projects There are a wide variety of options to choose from, including CMS systems like Joomla or Mambo (but not Drupal, which is available as a separate service from SI Computing), and blogs like Wordpress. Or you can code by hand using SSH, SFTP,SCP or cPanel (see Accessing your Personal Web Services Account below).

Initial Setup and Configuration via cPanel:

  • In a web browser of your choice, go to http://people.si.umich.edu/
  • Login with your UMich uniqname and kerberos password
  • On the left navigation column, click on My SI Account:
    Click on My SI Account
  • Near the bottom of the resulting page, click on My Cpanel Account and you will be automatically transferred to and logged into cPanel for your personal site
    Click on My Cpanel Account
  • You will now be in your cPanel dashboard, where you can see information about your web services account, and manage your websites.

About cPanel:

Your cPanel interface gives you the ability to add and configure all kinds of services for your personal SI website, including MySQL databases and phpMyAdmin (under Databases), PHP and Perl modules (under Software/Services), password protected directories (under Security), and much more. You can add and remove files and folders with one of the file managers under "Files". You can also see real-time stats and configuration settings on the left side of your cPanel page. Finally, you can click on "Fantastico De Luxe" (under Software/Services) and easily install, uninstall or upgrade CMS systems and all kinds of other advanced web services.

See the cPanel website for more information about this product.

About Fantastico De Luxe:

Fantastico De Luxe is a great utility that allows you to install advanced web services in your cPanel interface. Just go to your cPanel page and find it down under "Software / Services". From the Fantastico De Luxe page, you can choose which services to install and configure.

See the Fantastico De Luxe website for more information about this product.

Accessing Your Personal Web Services Account:

SCP, SFTP and SSH:

The host name for SSH, SCP and SFTP access for your personal site will be something like uniqname.people.si.umich.edu (where "uniqname" is your uniqname)

Example: the SSH, SCP and SFTP host for a person with the uniqname bob would be: bob.people.si.umich.edu

Website URL:

The default URL for your site is something like http://uniqname.people.si.umich.edu/
(where "uniqname" is your uniqname).

Example, the URL for a person with uniqname bob would be: http://bob.people.si.umich.edu/

cPanel:

You can also access your website files and folders using cPanel's File Manager (under Files), which includes an HTML editor and many other tools for hand-coding pages, uploading, downloading and editing files.

Mac OS X Finder:

  • Open the Finder and choose "Connect to Server" from the "Go" menu
  • In the "Server Address:" box, type "smb://uniqname.people.si.umich.edu" replacing "uniqname" with your uniqname
  • Click on the Connect" button and log in with your uniqname and your UM Active Directory password
  • This will mount your personal web space as a server folder under "Shared" in your Finder, and you'll be able to access it just like you'd access your local hard drive.

  • Check the "Reconnect at logon" box if you want the drive to come back after you restart the computer

  • If you're already logged into the computer as "umroot\uniqname" (with uniqname being your uniqname), click on the "OK" button; if you're not, then type in umroot\uniqname (again, using your uniqname instead) into the "User name" box
