SI 724: Qualitative Methods
Course focuses on design of qualitative studies, selection of data collection methods, and data analysis strategies for qualitative data. Students discuss the use of qualitative methods, inductive and deductive approaches, research design, operationalization, measurement issues, data collection and analysis techniques, validity and reliability of data, and writing up qualitative studies. While the course does not cover every potential qualitative data collection method, it discusses broad categories of data (verbal, observational, textual, visual).
In addition to methodological readings, readings using qualitative research techniques in the area of information (broadly defined) are used to help students appreciate the broad range of research possibilities in these fields. Readings from outside the area are used to introduce students to other research methodologies and issues of importance in carrying out a research study.
