SI 524: Special Topics: Open Source Software Systems and Their Communities
This course provides an introduction to the practices of open source (OS) software communities. It investigates a set of real-life OS communities: their leaders and participants, how they organize themselves, and their methods of creating useful tools for end-users. Anyone interested in how OS communities work, or is interested in how to work with OS communities (for instance, to understand, advise on adoption of, seek to modify the software from, or just feel comfortable using OS software) could profit from this course. No programming skills are required, as the focus is on the communities and their processes, and students develop a sufficient understanding of software production during the course. Interviews and Q&A's with OS community leaders and participants from different parts of the world are a part of the course.
