Computer Laboratory Facilities within SI

Hardware

SI provides computing facilities to faculty, staff, and students. Faculty and staff offices are equipped with Macintosh systems. All systems (including PowerBooks) have direct Internet connections and TCP/IP software, and generous memory and hard disk storage. Most Macintosh systems have built-in CD-ROM drives.

The Digital Information, Access and Dissemination (DIAD) Lab

This classroom-laboratory has met two important goals for instructional technology: to create a classroom-laboratory with workstations at each desk, and to expand the availability of open computing facilities for use by students working on technology-related projects. The DIAD lab, housed in the adjacent Shapiro Science Library, features approximately 40 Power Macintosh computers. All systems in the DIAD are connected directly to the campus network and to the Internet. The lab houses file servers for software applications and relevant projects, networked printers, and an instructor's workstation connected to a digital projection system.

All systems in this facility are connected directly to the campus network and to the Internet via the School's local area network. The lab houses file servers for software applications and relevant projects, networked printers, and an instructor's workstation connected to a very high-quality digital projection system. This classroom is one of the most advanced on campus, with regard to both technology and the use of technology for instruction on digital information.

Technical assistance, books, and additional materials are available to lab users during staffed periods (approximately 80 hours per week). These materials are unavailable during unstaffed hours, such as late at night and in the early morning. Since the lab may be reserved for use by courses and workshops, the room is equipped with a partition, which can be used to divide the room into two parts. This will be useful during small-group instruction, allowing a portion of the facility to be used by people not associated with the group activity.

Advanced Projects Laboratory Laboratory

Students use the MAP lab for experimental projects that involve multimedia production and presentation technologies. It houses a variety of equipment, including VCRs, digital audiovisual editing equipment, visualizers, flatbed and slide scanners, LaserDisc and PhotoCD players, digital cameras, 35mm film cameras, videocameras, and more. Power Macintosh systems with video input accessories, "Wintel" systems, and Silicon Graphics workstations are used to integrate the information produced with these systems into multimedia products.

Software at SI

SI faculty and students use a broad range of information processing applications. Software titles available to all SI students include Adobe Dimensions, Premiere, Illustrator, PhotoDeluxe, Photoshop, PageMill, and PageMaker; Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and Claris Draw, Claris Works, and Home Page. Also, students may choose from such titles as Fractal Design Poser, SoundEdit, Authorware, Director, Freehand, MacDraw Pro, Painter, Filemaker Pro, Word Perfect, Astound, Action! and others. SI has educational subscriptions to online information systems including Dialog, Nexis/Lexis, and OCLC.
