New topic -- "Open Topics"
Many thanks to Jennifer Bauer for her able guidance throughout our discussion of "Into the Rapids: Prospects for Students in New Degree Programs" We appreciate your efforts, and certainly, the comments of our CRISTAL-ED membership on this topic.
We are fast approaching end-of-the-year holidays. Many of us are hustling and bustling to finish holiday shopping, attend parties, travel, and make last-minute holday plans. Instead of featuring special topics at this time of year, we will turn our attention to New Topics suggestions.
Two topics have been suggested several times but I have failed to find a guest editor willing to host a discussion. The topics are:
Is there a CRISTAL-ED member who would be willing to lead a discussion on either topic?
These aren't the only topics that we might discuss in the new year. I'm sure many CRISTAL-ED members will have a few moments to pause and take note over the holidays -- you will be waiting for a partner or friend to emerge from a store, come home late in traffic or unpleasant weather, or arrive in town after a delayed flight. Take a moment to think about current topics that we might address in a listserv discussion and message them to the group. You can suggest topics to the entire group or message Steve (swooldri@umich.edu) or me (karen.drabenstott@umcih.edu) directly.
Many good wishes for a happy holiday season and a terrific new year.
Let's get started now on our New Topics discussion.

Last week I called for volunteers to lead discussions on three topics:
I have found a volunteer to lead a discussion on knowledge management. The other two topics have no takers yet. Perhaps they just aren't worth discussing.
What other topics do you have in mind for discussions in the new year? If you are hesitant to volunteer for guest editoring, I am scheduling for late April 1998 and beyond so you'd have a lot of time to think about and prepare for your topic.
You don't have to suggest a topic and be a guest editor. Let's do our best to have some suggestions early this week before the big holiday begins.

Anyone who still has doubt about "Information Management" should read the FID New Bulletin, Vol. 47 (July/August) 1997. KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT Special Issue. In hs editorial, Karl Kalseth, vice presient of FID states:
"Knowledge management is not a technical issue. Knowledge management is about how willing the organiztion is to allow people to learn and prosper, and how mature the organization is in implementing mechanisms to make this happen."
You may join the discussion and look over the list of past and future topics.
