Making a Difference: Multicultural Information Exchange (MIX)

In 2001 a group of students formed Underrepresented Minorities at the School of Information (UM@SI). In 2006, UM@SI members expanded the group's scope and reformed as the Multicultural Information Exchange, or MIX.

This student organization's mission is to assist historically underrepresented students with research opportunities and relationships at the School of Information and to actively participate in their recruitment. MIX works to strengthen the social capital of minority students at SI and to serve as an academic, social, and professional support system. For details, send E-mail to mixleadership@umich.edu.

MIX Mission

To assist historically underrepresented students with research opportunities and relationships at the School of Information and to actively participate in their recruitment.

MIX is organized to address three issues: research, relationships, and recruitment. Employing a flat organizational structure, the governing board consists of a speaker, recruitment chair, research chair, and relationship chair. Together with the general body, the organization takes a critical look at the intersection of minority communities (which include both SI and non-SI individuals) and their information needs.

Research

MIX is dedicated to making its members aware of the unique research and project opportunities available to underrepresented minority students at SI. There is support for both students pursing masters and PhD research and project work. The network is structured to help students develop research questions and projects, conduct and publish research, and secure funding for research and project initiatives. MIX organizes conference trips based on the research interest of its members and travels to support its members as they present at various conferences.

Relationships

MIX addresses relationships on three levels: academic, professional, and social. As a member of the larger University of Michigan minority graduate student community, the group connects its students with other students across the campus with similar social and professional goals. On an academic and professional level, MIX coordinates student faculty mixers and dinners throughout the year, attempting build upon the social capital of its members. Finally, as a host for the Students of Color of Rackham (SCOR) →, our members have an opportunity to present their research in front of the entire minority graduate student community.

Recruitment

As stated in the MIX mission, the organization takes an active approach to recruiting underrepresented minorities into SI. This includes speaking at prospective student meetings, attending appropriate recruiting conferences, and helping to fulfill the information needs of accepted and prospective students concerning SI. The group also participates in the SI Diversity Task Force.
