Linkages with other Institutions

The National Heritage Cultural Studies Centre cultivates active and reciprocal collaboration with many Universities in Africa, the United States and Europe in many areas of mutual interest

The Director of the NAHECSC has initiated linkages with the following institutions: The linkages explore the following areas of co-operation:

Linkage with the University of Michigan

The National Heritage Cultural Studies Centre has strong ties to both the School of Information and the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan. Director G T Sirayi visited the University of Michigan in July of 1996, consulting with numerous individuals about potential initiatives and technical systems that could be implemented at the National Heritage Cultural Studies Centre. Ms. N Kwatsha, Assistant Archivist at the NAHECSC, is also currently involved in a student exchange with the School of Information, where she will complete her Master of Science in Information in December of 1998. With the expertise in archives and technical systems she has gained there, Ms. Kwatsha will be an invaluable asset to the Centre upon her return.

During the summer of 1997 and then again in the spring and summer of 1998, 2 faculty members, 2 staff members, and 8 students of the University of Michigan have travelled to the University of Fort Hare, engaging in consultation, technical support, and processing of the Centre's archival materials. In preparation for the inauguration of the the new National Heritage Cultural Studies Centre Building and the official opening of the Liberation Archives and Cultural Heritage Archives, the University of Michigan team has worked with the staff of the Centre to evaluate and arrange archival materials and then written finding aids to the collections. The conception, development, and provision for maintenance of this Web site is also the result of the linkage between the School of Information and the NAHECSC.

Linkage with Michigan State University

During his stay in the United States, Professor Sirayi also visited Michigan State University, where he discussed funding and collaboration possibilties with the staff and faculty. Two members of the Michigan State University faculty, Dr. Kurt Dewhurst and Dr. Marsha MacDowell, along with Dr. Margaret Hedstrom from the University of Michigan visited the University of Fort Hare in the summer of 1997. Their stay yielded a set of recommendations for the preservation, arrangement and development the University of Fort Hare's museum and archival holdings.

Linkage with Columbia University

Deliberations on a joint involving the University of Fort Hare and Columbia University has led to the preparation of a discussion document on a Cultural Management Programme, which the national government seeks to sponsor.

Linkage with Ohio State University

Dr. Lupenga Mphande of Ohio State University visited the University of Fort Hare for five days in April of 1997. He worked with the NAHECSC staff to develop a draft project proposal for a Culture and Reconstruction project. The proposal has since been finalised and submitted to potential funders.
