This is Internet On The Air. I'm Joan Silvi. Distributing music over the Internet... Details in a moment.

Funding Credit: Internet On The Air is a production of the University of Michigan School of Information and Michigan radio, made possible by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Next time you want new music in a hurry, consider the possibility of downloading it over the Internet. A new digital audio format, called MP3, offers compact disc quality and the promise of nearly instant gratification.

Steve Grady is the Vice President of Corporate Communications for goodnoise.com. His site sells MP3 singles of independent label artists, like Frank Zappa and Bruce Cockburn, for 99 cents a piece. In contrast to previous formats, which took hours to download, Grady says most users can download an MP3 single in about <<>> minutes.

Not everyone is happy about MP3. The Recording Industry of America is concerned that the format is too easy to copy. It has filed lawsuits to block release of a new handheld MP3 player and a new MP3 Internet search engine. For the time being, both products are still available.

Grady says major record labels may start using MP3 once they are able to protect recordings with unique digital signatures. If MP3 catches on, it could change the way we purchase and experience music. Some pioneering artists, like Todd Rundgren, are already exploring the possibilities. Rundgren now sells yearly subscriptions to his Web site, letting fans hear new tracks as soon as they are created, as well as old favorites from his archives.
