JSB Symposium Webcast FAQ


logo: John Seely Brown Symposium on Technology and Society The 2008 John Seely Brown Symposium on Technology and Society will be Webcast live, October 22, 3-5:30 p.m. ET (-0400), for those who can't make it in person.

Webcast viewers will also be able to submit questions for the Q&A session to jsbsymposium@umich.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Webcast




Where do I go to view the Webcast?
You can click here to launch the Webcast a few minutes before 3:00 p.m. ET (-0400).

Note that this link will return a "not found" message until it is made live a few minutes before the start of the event.

Do I have to register to attend the Webcast?
No registration is required. Simply visit si.umich.edu/jsb.

What software do I need to view the Webcast?
You can view the Webcast using Windows Media Player (version 10 or 11 for the PC; version 9 for the Mac).

As an alternative, you can download and use the free VLC player, which is available for many platforms, including many varieties of Linux.

How can I test my player to ensure it works with the Webcast?
You can test your player ahead of time. Click here to test your player.

How fast of a connection do I need?
You should have a connection of at least 500 Kbps to view the Webcast comfortably. A DSL connection should suffice.

When will the Webcast feed be available?
The Webcast feed will be accessible a few minutes before the event starts. If you visit the URL previous to that, you'll probably see your media player open up and show you an error message and/or a black screen.

How can I submit a question for the Q&A?
You can submit a question for the Q&A session by e-mailing it to jsbsymposium@umich.edu during the keynote talk or the Q&A session. When you submit a question, please let us know where you're tuning in.

When can I submit a question for the Q&A?
You can submit a question for the Q&A session either during Brewster Kahle's keynote talk or during the Q&A session itself.

Will a copy of the Webcast be available after the event?
A copy of the Webcast recording will be posted after the event, though it will probably be at least the following day before it is posted. It will be linked prominently from the main event page at si.umich.edu/jsb.
