Philip Power: At this time and especially in this company, I have little to say about the information revolution other than to observe that fundamental and transformational shifts in technology are very, very rare in human history, perhaps occurring only once or twice a century. We seem to be in the midst of one such, which is why the subtitle of the symposium is, "The Information Revolution: The View from Midstream."

To position of the University of Michigan in this information revolution and to welcome you, I would like to introduce Lee C. Bollinger, the 12th president of the university, formerly the dean of our law school and provost of Dartmouth. President Bollinger is a world authority on the First Amendment and will be serving as the chair of one of the panels tomorrow. Although superficially shy and retiring, his scholarly exterior conceals a fierce competitive streak as a world-class runner. Lee Bollinger.
