Toward an Integrated Model of Information Seeking and SearchingDr. Marcia J. Bates
7:00pm The emphasis in much information seeking research at the current time is on the social and cultural context of human interaction with information. This effort is highly desirable, but is incomplete. An integrated model of information seeking and searching will be attempted, in two senses: 1) a single model that incorporates both information seeking and searching within it, and 2) a model that integrates the social and cultural with the underlying biological and anthropological layers of human experience with respect to information seeking and searching. Implications of the model will be drawn for human-computer interface design. About the SpeakerDr. Marcia J. Bates is Professor in the Dept. of Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She has published widely in the areas of information seeking and searching, information system design, and subject access to information. She has consulted for a wide range of institutions, including government, foundations, and companies, including dot-coms. Dr. Bates is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and has twice received the "Best JASIS Paper of the Year" Award from the American Society for Information Science and Technology. |
