MSI Degree Requirements
Students Who Entered Before Fall 2007
Students who entered the MSI program before Fall 2007 must take four three-credit "Foundations" courses that introduce them to the fundamentals of library and information science, computer science, psychology, and economics. Foundations courses are often team-taught by faculty from two underlying disciplines. The four required Foundations courses are as follows:
Students who were unable to complete these four Foundations courses in the 2006-2007 academic year have been approved to complete specific substitute courses. If you have questions, please contact Judy Lawson at jmlawson@umich.edu.
In addition to the "Foundations" courses, students must elect at least 18 credit hours of additional SI coursework and six hours of cognate courses (generally offered in another department or unit at U-M), and must accrue at least six Practical Engagement Program (PEP) credits through activities. Practical Engagement Program credits, also known as "PEP points," are accumulated through credit-based summer internships and/or coursework that carries PEP credits.
Visit the PEP page to learn more more about the Practical Engagement Program.
MSI specializations have additional requirements within this framework. Use the links at left to learn more.
Program requirements on this page are current for the 2007-2008 academic year.
