School Library Media Program Requirements

The School of Information offers a program that allows you to meet the requirements for the ALA-accredited MSI degree, the library media endorsement, and if needed, a teaching certificate.

What you will need will depend on whether you already have an ALA-accredited degree and/or a teaching certificate. The requirements for the library media endorsement are set by the School of Information, the University of Michigan School of Education, and the State of Michigan Department of Education.

We provide descriptions of four sets of requirements to cover the following situations:
  • Scenario A: You are seeking the MSI degree, the library media endorsement, and teaching certification.
  • Scenario B: You are seeking the MSI degree and the library media endorsement, but already have teaching certification.
  • Scenario C: You already have an ALA-accredited degree but require both a library media endorsement and teaching certification.
  • Scenario D: You already have both an ALA-accredited degree and teaching certification, and require only the library media endorsement.
You can complete any of the options in two calendar years if you follow the prescribed plan. If you already have an ALA-accredited master's degree, you may even be able to place out of some required courses.

Our program is available to those who either have an ALA-accredited degree from another institution or who plan to acquire an MSI degree at the School of Information. If you are interested in library media certification without an ALA-accredited degree, please see the NCATE Web site →.

General MSI Requirements
(for students entering Fall 2007 or later)

All MSI students who enter in Fall 2007 or later must complete at least 48 credit hours of graduate coursework, including

"Opportunity is a word that I would use to describe the SI program. I was afforded so many amazing opportunities at SI that simply do not exist at other schools. In many cases, it was the SI faculty that brought these opportunities to my attention. I found the SI faculty to be very supportive and committed to student success. With the balanced curriculum of technology, information theory, library science, and real-world opportunities, I left SI ready to take on whatever lies ahead."

School of Education Coursework

If you wish to pursue Option A or Option C in School Library Media, you will need to gain student status in the School of Education to register for required courses there. You do this by completing a special admission form the term before you plan to take School of Education classes. All School Library Media students at SI will be granted admission to the School of Education for this coursework.

If you wish to earn your teaching certificate (Option A or C), you will also need to complete requirements for a teachable minor in addition to the coursework listed on this page. A School of Education advisor is available to review your undergraduate transcript and discuss any additional coursework you may need.

Contact Paige Pawson (ppawson@umich.edu) at the School of Education if you have questions.
