Tailored MSI Statement Advice

This page provides additional information for Tailored MSI students preparing their statements. The basic requirement for the Tailored MSI Statement says:

As a student in the Tailored MSI program, you must submit a one- to three-page statement that describes:
  • your academic and professional career goals,
  • a framework of types of courses that will assist you in realizing these goals, and
  • specific SI courses and cognate courses that you have taken or are considering.

When preparing your Tailored MSI Statement, keep the following points of advice in mind.
  1. The aim of the Tailored MSI Statement requirement is to encourage you as a Tailored student to reflect on your educational choices by maintaining an up to date account of your educational goals, experiences, and plans.
  2. You should prepare and submit your Tailored MSI Statement as soon as you decide to seek a Tailored MSI degree. The statement must be approved for graduation.
  3. You should update the statement each semester to reflect courses you have completed and the natural evolution of your plans and goals over time.
  4. You should complete the final version of your statement during the semester before graduation. Coming near the end of your MSI program, this version will naturally put more weight on recording your accomplishments and reflecting on how they relate to your original plans and goals.
  5. Each version of a Tailored Statement should convey your areas of interest and educational goals. It may not always be possible, especially in the early stages, to also state clear career goals, but you should indicate your current thinking about career possibilities or ideal jobs and relate them to your educational goals. The statement should describe your plans for coursework that will explore those areas of interest and educational goals. It should report on courses you have already taken and how those courses relate to your interests and goals. It can be useful as well to mention internships, projects, or other educational experiences that may contribute to your progress.
Program requirements on this page are current for the 2008-2009 academic year.
