Tailor Your Own MSI

A big advantage of the MSI Tailored program is the ability to focus on courses that you believe will most closely match your career interests. In selecting courses at SI and the U-M, you work closely with a faculty advisor to ensure that all degree requirements are met while addressing your specific academic interests and goals.

As a Tailored program student, you submit a one- to three-page statement outlining your academic and professional career goals. This provides a framework for selecting types of courses that will assist you in realizing your goals, and a list of specific SI courses and cognate courses that you have taken or are considering. Career goals of past Tailored students have included using the Internet as a tool to increase and establish community relationships, understanding how information resources can contribute to economic development, and preparing for a career in medical informatics.

Tailored program graduates can be found in careers as wide-ranging as their own interests at such organizations as Hewlett-Packard, Texas Tech University, Valassis, Clear Channel Radio, JSTOR, Toyota, Pro Bono Net, Catholic Relief Services, Enlighten, and the Internal Revenue Service.

SI offers students dual-degree programs that combine the SI master's with a degree in business, law, medicine, nursing, public policy, or social work. Students selecting one of these options generally enroll under the tailored MSI because of its flexibility.

The School of Information encourages you to find your own way and offers you the academic programs and advising that make it possible for you to succeed. What is your dream?

"We've got a lot of room for School of Information students to find their own way and construct a path for themselves that may be one that we haven't already thought of, or possibly that society hasn't already thought of."
