Food/survival: Pinon nuts are harvested as food and eaten as a snack.
Ceremonies/medicine: Pinon trees produce pollen in mid June and it is collected for ceremonial purposes. The pollen is used during prayers to bless oneself and to bless important belongings such as jewelry, medicine bundles, saddle, blanket and your children's clothing.
Art: Pinon pitch/gum is used as a glaze for Navajo pottery.
Other uses: Pinon pitch is also used as antiseptic or antibiotic daub for sores, scrapes, cuts, scratches, and abrasions. Pinon is also used for wool dye. The pinon will produce black dye.
