Alternative Spring Break at SI (ASB) 2009
Alternative Spring Break 2009 will take place February 23-27, 2009. This is the School of Information's 11th year of ASB and we plan to make it the best one yet.
ASB 2009 will take place in New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago and possibly, new to 2009, Detroit! This is a great opportunity for School of Information students to sample what it's like to work in a big-city environment at some of the leading government and education organizations in the information industry.
ASB also gives MSI candidates the opportunity to apply their SI-skills at small non-profits that are much in need of assistance. School of Information student involvement in ASB can make a big difference to an organization, in addition to being a great networking and professional opportunity for the student.
If you are interested in participating in ASB 2009 and/or would like to help make it a success, read on. Beyond going on ASB next term, there are many ways for people to be involved in the planning of this even; you don't need to go to be part of one of the committees below.

Fundraising/Planning Committee
If you would like to be part of the planning and fundraising for ASB, then this is the committee for you. Don't worry, you won't be standing on a corner asking for money. This group has a lot of fun and the time commitment is only as much as you want it to be.
In past years, this group has organized a can drive, a book drive/sale, the SI Revue (talent show), and the Annual Penny Wars competition. And we're open to new ideas for this year.
This group also has the most interaction with the coordination of ASB, so if you want to have a voice in how 2009 is planned, join us. We can never have too many people on this committee, and it's something that you can add as leadership experience on your resume. See below for instructions on how to join.
Web Site/Content Management Committee
The SI-ASB Web site is created by a student committee. We're looking for a small group of students who want to build a Web site from scratch, and for some great content managers or editors to help develop the information being displayed. We'd also like the student application form and the project submission form to be part of this site, so if you are interested in developing an interactive Web site and applying your usability education to make a super-simple and slick interface, this is the group for you.
If you are in need of tangible examples to show to employers for internship or job interviews, this committee would give you great experience. This group only meets occasionally and the work associated ebbs and flows. See below for instructions on how to join this committee.
Community Service Committee
New for 2009! ASB is an opportunity for you to get some great, short-term experience on your resume, but it's also an opportunity to help out others. This committee will help develop the service-learning side of ASB and will help plan some local service events in the months preceding ASB. See below for instructions on how to join this committee.
How to Join the ASB Interest Committee Listservs
