The Queens Library, one of the largest and busiest urban public library systems in the country, is located in the most diverse county in the nation and offers a wide variety of programming and services for all ages.

Project Objectives

  • Serve as a homework help monitor as part of the Far Rockaway 21st Century Community Learning Center grant teen program
  • Develop homework help pathfinders and resource guides for students, caregivers and educators
  • Assist with the promotion of the young adult summer reading program
  • Gain experience in reference service, collection development and readers' advisory

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about the various aspects of public librarianship, including providing reference service, and bibliographic instruction, readers' advisory and collection development
  • Learn how different libraries tailor their collections and services to best serve their communities
  • Learn about the different ways libraries attract and engage teens in reading and other enrichment educational activities
  • Gain experience working closely with at-risk youth in a library setting.
  • Learn about the information-seeking patterns of young adults with low literacy levels and create resource guides and print materials to guide patrons to resources

Project Outcomes

In the course of this DFE I served as a reference intern in a neighborhood branch in Elmhurst, NY and ran a summer reading program for teens at another neighborhood branch in Far Rockaway, NY. I assisted patrons with locating books and other resources and provided basic computer instruction. In Far Rockaway I planned and presented programs and events as part of the summer reading program and created a blog where participants could blog about the books they read and interact. This summer Queens Library had their highest enrollment in the teen summer reading program thus far.
