The Grand Rapids Public Library serves a large urban area with one main library and seven branches.

Project Objectives

  • Participate in all aspects of the Summer Reading Program
  • Collect resources for the Homework Help area of the Teen Web site
  • Conduct Story Time for preschool age children
  • Answer reference/readers' advisory questions at the youth services desk
  • Conduct online research for the Assistant Director

Learning Objectives


  • Become more knowledgeable about public library services for children
  • Gain experience in the execution of a large summer reading program
  • Improve Web research skills

Project Outcomes


I was able to experience public library service to children in both a large library and small branch library settings. I gained valuable knowledge in the area of youth librarianship and was able to actively contribute to the success of the Summer Reading Program.
