The University of Michigan Law School Library is the academic law library of the University of Michigan Law School.

Project Objectives

  • Train at the level of professional law librarian in all aspects of reference work
  • Select materials in keeping with the Law Library's collection development policy
  • Focus on collection development project for French speaking countries using French language skills
  • Work on collection development for other jurisdictions
  • Participate in selection and collection development meetings
  • Gain Law Library supervisory experience at Reference Desk
  • Supervise law student Reference Desk Assistants (RDAs) during scheduled shifts at the reference desk
  • Facilitate effective reference interviews between RDAs and patrons with an undergraduate, graduate, attorney, public, and faculty clientele
  • Instruct and reinforce RDA's knowledge of desk policies and procedures and how to use the law library reference collection
  • Provide the Law Library's services to the Law School faculty
  • Conduct research projects through the Faculty Research Service
  • Gather resources required by faculty through the Document Delivery Service

Learning Objectives


  • Understand the role of a reference librarian in an academic law library
  • Become familiar with the Law Library's collection development policy for foreign and international law
  • Learn how to conduct routine selection of materials in foreign and international law with an undergraduate, graduate, attorney, public, and faculty clientele
  • Gain experience in day-to-day operation and running of faculty services
  • Learn and perform collection development for foreign and international law

Project Outcomes


While at the UM Law Library, I recommended treatises to add to the collection, reviewed the Law Library's holdings of primary materials for France, and trained and worked at the reference desk with law student Reference Desk Assistants (RDAs). I researched one long term project on international law for one of the law school faculty.
