Summer 2005
Email

The American Museum of Natural History is a nonprofit research institution chartered as a Museum and Library by the State of New York in 1869. Since that time the Library has grown into the largest natural history library in the Western Hemisphere.

Project Objectives

  • Ensure a consistent and comprehensive standards-based indexing system throughout the different multi-media collections
  • Create a Data Dictionary to define the data fields included in the Digital Resource Management System (DRMS) database
  • Identify the metadata standards used in the system
  • Support development of the Electronic Resources Guides that will describe the scope and content of individual collections

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the inner workings of a special collection and archive of an international cultural and science institution
  • Gain knowledge in descriptive data standards used in creating access to multimedia collections in a digital environment
  • Gain specific knowledge of implementing a major research database in a museum library
  • Exercise user-interface analysis for user-centered database systems

Project Outcomes

While at my internship, I analyzed the DRMS database and targeted datasets for import into the new system. The project is still ongoing and I was asked to participate in the next phase to clean up data, finalize the data field dictionary and create sample records.
