The University of Michigan Office of Technology Transfer is the unit responsible for the transfer of University technology to the marketplace. They provide professional services to ensure that results of University research are transferred to outside partners and produce benefits for the University, communities and the general public.

Project Objectives

  • Review invention disclosures for marketability and technology value
  • Draft non-confidential abstracts to express technology value proposition and to use as marketing tool, per practices that have been developed Additionally, plan and initiate an overview of previously marketed cases
  • Perform web-based search for companies working in a specific technology
  • Perform web-based background search in commercialization of the technology
  • Compose correspondence to send along with non-confidential abstract
  • Construct a virtual technology review committee consisting of contacts in each industry from which OTT can obtain feedback

Learning Objectives


  • Assess technology, how to approach outside industry, and finally how to "sell" the technology when a company shows an interest in the process
  • Gain skill with working with information found strictly on the web

Project Outcomes


While at UM Technology Transfer, I marketed a number of cases to targeted industry executives. In addition, I created a database that included the various industry area contacts who were identified in the Virtual Technology Review Committees. Finally,I recommended changes to the Tech Transfer website, and several changes will be implemented in the upcoming academic year.
